Is the poster really free?
Yes. The print file downloads with no payment and no sign-up, and it carries no watermark. Many star map shops charge for exactly this file.
What size is the file?
The portrait poster saves as a 3570×5049 px PNG in the A-series ratio (1:1.414). The square one is a 5100×5100 px PNG. You can also save a 1080×1920 image for stories, which carries the site name.
How large can I print it?
At A3 the portrait file gives about 305 DPI, which is print-shop quality. At A2 it comes to about 215 DPI, usually enough for a poster on the wall. The square file prints at 30×30 cm with plenty to spare.
How is Pro mode different from the standard one?
Not only in the number of settings (8 themes, 13 map and design options) but in file quality too. Standard mode gives a 3570×5049 px PNG: enough up to A3, while at A1 it comes to about 150 DPI and small labels get soft. In Pro the poster saves as a vector A1 PDF (594×840 mm): stars, lines and text stay sharp at any print size. The PDF is part of the Pro subscription.
How accurate is the sky?
The map shows 5,044 naked-eye stars from the Hipparcos catalogue plus the constellation lines. The sky is turned to the latitude and longitude of the city and to local time, converted to UTC with the city’s time zone, daylight saving included. The Moon phase is computed for the same date.
What if I don’t know the exact time?
Then the map is drawn for 22:00 local time. The sky turns a lot over one night, so with the exact time the map is closer to what was really overhead.
Which languages can the poster use?
The poster text can be in English, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese or Latin. The designer itself works in 10 languages.
