Major Arcana 9

The Hermit: tarot card meaning

The Hermit

What the card shows

An old man in a grey hooded cloak stands alone on a snowy peak, holding a glowing lantern in one hand and a long yellow staff in the other. The background is a flat blue-grey, with no people or buildings anywhere around.

Deck: the 1909 edition, illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith.

Upright meaning

prudence, solitude, inner light, caution, discretion

The Hermit speaks of prudence, and of a time when it makes sense to be alone with your thoughts. He walks by himself, but he carries a lantern: the light reaches only a few steps ahead, and that is enough. The card draws attention to a stretch when you need to think before you act: taking a pause after a hard year, sorting out your motives, choosing what to study next. There is also a note of discretion: not everything has to be shared right away. Consider which question is best turned over in silence, and which deserves a talk with someone you trust.

Reversed meaning

concealment, fear, needless caution, isolation, refusing advice

Reversed, the Hermit can point to concealment, fear and caution gone too far. You may be hiding something that is overdue for discussion, or putting off a step because you fear a mistake. Picture not calling an old friend for months after a quarrel, telling yourself it is safer. Ask where solitude has turned into a hiding place, and what might happen if you stepped out with an honest conversation. Caution is useful while it helps, and costly once it becomes a habit of avoiding.

In love and relationships

In a relationship, the Hermit can reflect a need to be alone to sort out your feelings: an evening without your phone, a solo walk, a quiet trip. It can also describe care in a new acquaintance, where you look closely and do not rush closeness. If you are in a couple, tell your partner you need time and say how long, so the pause does not read as distance.

At work

At work, the card can describe a period of focused, independent effort: research, preparation, study, working through a hard decision without the noise. It is a good time to hold off on saying yes and think an offer over. If you live in back-to-back meetings, carve out a couple of quiet hours for the main task. If you are avoiding a talk with your manager, ask yourself why.

A question for yourself

What do I need to think through in quiet before I take my next step?

If things feel very hard right now, if you are having thoughts of not wanting to live, or if someone is hurting you, please talk to a real person. If your life is in danger, call your local emergency number. Free helplines by country: findahelpline.com
