Major Arcana 2
The High Priestess: tarot card meaning

What the card shows
A woman in a blue cloak sits between a black pillar marked B and a white pillar marked J. A crown with a moon disc rests on her head, a cross on her chest, and a scroll partly lettered sits in her lap. A crescent moon lies at her feet, and a patterned veil hung with pomegranates and palms is behind her.
Deck: the 1909 edition, illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith.
Upright meaning
secrets, silence, intuition, hidden knowledge, patience
The High Priestess sits still between two pillars, holding a scroll and showing only part of it. The card is tied to secrets, an unopened future, silence and wisdom. It suggests not forcing an answer: some situations simply lack the information yet, and pushing with questions only adds noise. Ask yourself what you already know but have not admitted, and what you would want to learn before deciding. This can be a time of quiet work, such as reading, observing, and hearing someone out to the end. Much here is behind a veil, and the card allows that some things only become clear with time.
Reversed meaning
passion, conceit, surface knowledge, haste, loud words
Reversed, the High Priestess hints at passion that drowns out a quiet inner voice, and to conceit: you feel sure you have understood, though you have seen only a part. Older readings also speak of surface knowledge, where one article read feels like having mastered a field. The card invites you to check whether you are mistaking volume for depth. Try holding a pause before voicing an opinion, and ask someone who knows the subject better.
In love and relationships
In love the High Priestess can describe a person who keeps part of themselves closed, or you, if you are not ready to say everything yet. Watch how someone behaves over time and skip the interrogation. Trust grows slowly here. If you are single, this may be a stretch when it helps more to sort out what you actually want from closeness.
At work
At work the High Priestess can refer to a situation where you know more than you say aloud, or where part of the information is hidden from you. It helps to gather details, read internal materials and listen in meetings. This is the observer's card: decisions are better postponed until the picture is fuller. If you have been trusted with someone else's confidential information, it suggests keeping it private.
A question for yourself
What do I already feel about this situation that I have not let myself put into words?
For entertainment and reflection. The cards do not predict the future and do not replace a doctor, lawyer or financial adviser.
