The Tower: tarot card meaning

The Tower

What the card shows

A tall grey tower stands on a rocky crag while a lightning bolt knocks its golden crown off the top. Flames burst from the windows, and two figures tumble headfirst through a black sky scattered with yellow sparks.

Deck: the 1909 edition, illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith.

Upright meaning

collapsing plan, sudden insight, upheaval, broken belief, rethinking

The Tower shows a belief or a plan that has stopped holding. Lightning knocks the crown off the top and two people fall along with the debris. The card can also stand for a sudden discovery after which the old version of events no longer works. Say you built your career around one position and learn it will never be open to you. That hurts, yet it shows what the structure was standing on. Do not rescue what has already come down; ask what you can use as a foundation. It describes old supports losing strength and says nothing about what follows.

Reversed meaning

pressure, cracks, tension, delay, preparation

The reversed Tower is milder: there are cracks, though the building still stands. This may be pressure that builds while you put off an unpleasant conversation or decision. Sometimes you are already loosening an old structure yourself and fear finishing the job. Look at what exactly is creaking: a promise, an opinion of yourself, an expectation of another person. If you deal with it now, you keep the chance to rebuild more carefully than a sudden collapse would allow.

In love and relationships

In relationships the Tower may mark the moment when something comes out that changes the picture: a different version of events, a conversation after which the old routine stops working. Hold back from sweeping conclusions and look at which expectations were never checked. Reversed, it speaks of tension that can still be talked through. Name small grievances aloud before they turn into one big quarrel.

At work

At work the card may indicate a revision of plans: a project is closed, a strategy shifts, a familiar role loses its point. It suggests separating what fell from what remains, since your skills, contacts and knowledge are still yours. Reversed, it points to pressure and instability without a full collapse. A sensible move is to prepare a fallback in advance and agree realistic deadlines with your manager.

A question for yourself

Which of my beliefs stands only because I have not checked it in a long time?
