Major Arcana 13
Death: tarot card meaning

What the card shows
A skeleton in black armor rides a white horse and carries a black banner with a white flower. In front of the horse, a bishop in a yellow robe and tall hat stands with hands raised, a child holding flowers kneels, a woman sits on the ground, and another figure lies on the grass at the left. In the distance a sun rises between two towers, with a river and a small boat nearby.

Upright meaning
ending, closure, letting go, transition, making room
This card does not predict anyone's death, and it is not a warning of disaster. It is about the end of a chapter: school finished, an old arrangement stopped working, a role you have outgrown. Notice that the picture is in motion: some figures bow to the skeleton, yet the sun comes up between the towers in the distance. Think of finally clearing out a closet where things from a former life sat for years. First it feels sad, then it feels spacious. The card invites you to admit that something is over, thank it for what it gave, and make room for what comes next.
Reversed meaning
stagnation, inertia, clinging, weariness of waiting, delayed ending
Reversed, the card can suggest an ending that has happened without being acknowledged. Something stopped working a while ago, but you keep behaving as if it had not, and tiredness and a sense of being stuck pile up. Sometimes this shows up as a feeling that nothing new is coming. That is a feeling, not a fact or a forecast. The card still describes a transition, only a dragged-out one, and says nothing about anyone's death. If the feeling will not let go, do not stay alone with it. It suggests asking what exactly you are not ready to let go of, and why it matters to you.
In love and relationships
In relationships the card can point to the close of one stage: the early rush has settled into ordinary shared life, or an old pattern of communication no longer fits either of you. That is not a verdict on the couple. It can be a good moment to talk about how to live from here. If a relationship is ending, give yourself time to say goodbye first.
At work
At work the card can mark an ending: a project wrapped up, you have outgrown a position, the team is changing. Endings like this often clear space for something new. It helps to list what you take with you (skills, contacts, experience) and what is time to leave behind. Try not to cling to a role just because it is familiar, and talk calmly about the next step.
A question for yourself
What in my life has already ended, and what keeps me from admitting it?
