Major Arcana 14

Temperance: tarot card meaning

Temperance

What the card shows

A winged figure with a golden halo pours a thin stream of water from one gold cup into another. One foot rests in a pond and the other on the bank, with yellow irises growing close by. In the distance a path leads toward mountains and a glowing sun.

Deck: the 1909 edition, illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith.

Upright meaning

measure, balance, patience, blending, thrift

Temperance is about proportion. You take what a situation needs and no more, and you mix things you usually keep apart: work and rest, boldness and caution, your own wishes and other people's requests. The water on the card moves between the cups without a splash, because nobody is rushing it. This card draws attention to a stretch where a steady pace beats a sprint. Say you stop working on a project until midnight and split it into daily portions, and it actually moves faster. It also invites you to check where you spend energy generously and where you hold back. Thrift here means making your time and attention last.

Reversed meaning

discord, imbalance, rushing, clashing interests, poor fit

Reversed, the card suggests that parts of your life have stopped working together. One cup overflows, the other stays dry, and the water misses both. This often looks like clashing interests: you want a week off while your team expects a delivery, or you promised a friend your Saturday and have nothing left for yourself. Name the two things pulling against each other and decide how much of each you can realistically carry, before you argue with yourself or with others.

In love and relationships

In love, Temperance points to the balance between "me" and "us". It may be worth looking at who usually gives way. Reversed, it can show mismatched speeds: one person is ready to talk about living together, the other just wants to keep seeing each other. A direct conversation about what pace feels comfortable to each of you helps more than hints or ultimatums.

At work

At work, Temperance concerns how you divide your load. Say you cover tasks for two teams and need an order that treats both fairly. Choose a sequence instead of grabbing everything at once. Reversed, it may point to conflicting priorities in a team or an uneven rhythm, a crunch followed by nothing. Talk through a shared schedule so everyone knows what is expected and when.

A question for yourself

Where in my life is one cup overflowing while the other stands empty?

For entertainment and reflection. The cards do not predict the future and do not replace a doctor, lawyer or financial adviser.
